Hair Loss Treatment

Understanding Male Pattern Baldness

Male pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia, is the most common cause of hair loss in men. It affects approximately 50% of men over the age of 50 and can begin as early as the late teens or early 20s. The condition is caused by a combination of genetic predisposition and the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which causes hair follicles to shrink over time, producing thinner and shorter hairs until they eventually stop growing altogether.

Hair loss typically follows a predictable pattern, beginning with a receding hairline and thinning at the crown, eventually progressing to partial or complete baldness on the top of the scalp. While hair loss is not a medical emergency, it can have a significant impact on confidence and self-esteem.

Clinically Proven Treatments

At TRT South, we offer only clinically proven, evidence-based treatments for hair loss. Our doctors will assess your specific pattern and stage of hair loss and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan.

Finasteride

Finasteride is a prescription medication taken as a daily tablet. It works by blocking the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone into DHT. By reducing DHT levels in the scalp, finasteride can slow hair loss and, in many cases, promote regrowth. Clinical studies show that approximately 90% of men who take finasteride experience either maintained or increased hair density over a two-year period.

Minoxidil

Minoxidil is a topical treatment applied directly to the scalp, typically twice daily. It works by stimulating blood flow to the hair follicles and extending the growth phase of the hair cycle. Minoxidil is available over the counter but is most effective when used as part of a structured treatment plan under medical guidance. It can be used alone or in combination with finasteride for enhanced results.

Combination Therapy

For many men, the most effective approach combines finasteride and minoxidil. This dual approach addresses hair loss from two different angles - reducing DHT systemically while stimulating follicle activity locally. Our doctors can advise on the best combination for your individual situation.

Hair Loss and TRT

One of the common concerns for men considering TRT is the potential impact on hair loss. Because TRT can increase DHT levels, it is important to monitor for changes in hair density. At TRT South, we proactively address this by discussing hair preservation strategies during your initial consultation. For men who are prone to hair loss, we can include DHT-blocking treatments alongside their TRT protocol.

Early Treatment Gets the Best Results

The most effective time to treat hair loss is early, when the follicles are still active and capable of producing hair. Once a follicle has been dormant for an extended period, it becomes much harder to reactivate. If you are noticing thinning hair or a receding hairline, we recommend seeking treatment sooner rather than later to maximise your results.
